Why Are These Three Liberal States So Hard On The Poor?
Talking Points Memo – Nathan Salminen.

You may not know this, but Washington State has the most regressive tax system in the United States. The lowest income bracket in the state pays nearly 17% of their income to state taxes while only 2.4% of the top one percent’s income goes to state taxes. Salminen further adds that three Democratic states (Washington, Illinois and Hawaii) have the lowest social safety nets in the country, but
Of the three, Washington is again the worst, spending $306 less per person on its safety net than the national average.
Jobless claims near 15 year low: Despite moderate economic growth, Reuters reports that this month’s lower than expected jobless claims signify that the step down in March’s job growth was most likely an aberration.

Gov. Cuomo calls for minimum wage increase: In an op-ed penned in the New York Times yesterday, Cuomo went to bat for fast food workers in New York State, stating that “New York can set fast food workers on a path out of poverty, ease the burden on taxpayers and create a new national standard.”

UK Election too close to call: John Cassidy says that today’s election, no matter the result, is historic in that it is the UK’s closest race in recent memory. What also stands out is that public opinion in the UK appears to have barely moved at all during the campaign. Good job David Axelrod and Jim Messina?
